Why medical weight loss matters in New York

Weight-related health challenges are a growing concern across New York, from the boroughs of New York City to rural upstate communities. Obesity isn’t just a personal issue. It’s a public health priority. It affects energy levels, mobility, heart health, and overall quality of life.

According to the New York State Department of Health, in 2023, nearly 29% of adults in New York State were living with obesity. In some upstate counties, obesity rates were even higher than the state average. Among New York City boroughs, obesity prevalence is highest in the Bronx (34.5%) and lowest in New York City (Manhattan 17.2%).

Obesity is also rising among young people. The NYC Health Department reports that nearly one in five public school students in kindergarten through eighth grade are classified as obese (21%). That means many children in New York are already at elevated risk for serious long-term health problems.

The causes are complex. Fast-paced urban life, food deserts in some communities, stress, long work hours, and simply the way people’s bodies are designed all contribute. In many cases, it’s not about eating too much. It’s about biology, environment, and access. Bodies resist change, especially when underlying conditions, such as insulin resistance or hormone imbalances, are present.

This is where medical weight loss treatments, like GLP-1 medications, offer a real path forward. Medications like semaglutide (Ozempic®) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) work with your body to curb appetite and regulate blood sugar. They support meaningful weight loss, especially when paired with sustainable lifestyle changes, allowing you to take control of your health and well-being.

How access to medical weight loss is improving in New York

Real-world care is modernizing

Leading health systems like Mount Sinai, NYU Langone, and Weill Cornell Medicine offer medical weight-loss programs with multidisciplinary care, combining behavioral therapy, metabolic medications, and surgical support when evidence indicates it’s needed.

Care is increasingly offered through virtual platforms, helping eliminate barriers for people who face mobility challenges, time constraints, or stigma. Studies suggest that virtual obesity care can be just as effective as in‑person treatment, even for patients from diverse backgrounds and geographies.

Legislation is working to catch up

New York leaders are advancing legislation that would dramatically expand access to obesity treatment. Senate Bill S5798, introduced by Senator Sepulveda, proposes adding a new section (§368‑g) to the Social Services Law, requiring Medicaid managed care plans to cover FDA-approved weight-loss medications for chronic weight management.

In parallel, Senate Bill S3104 and Assembly A2715 seek comprehensive coverage across both Medicaid and commercial insurance. This would mandate coverage of prevention and wellness, nutrition counseling, intensive behavioral therapy, bariatric surgery, and FDA-approved weight loss medications, without imposing stricter rules than those approved by the FDA. It also requires insurers to provide this coverage on par with other medical conditions, with no extra deductibles or restrictive caps.

Although these bills are still active and have not yet passed, they reflect a long-overdue shift toward treating obesity as a medical condition that deserves evidence-based care rather than stigma or minimal intervention.

Community voices raising awareness

Across New York, patients, providers, organizations, and advocates are raising their voices about the urgent need for better access to weight loss treatment, especially for those relying on Medicaid. Many individuals living with obesity report feeling overlooked by a system that treats the condition as a personal failing rather than a medical issue. The result? Delayed care, preventable complications, and frustration that builds over time.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Violeta Popov of NYU Langone, who also leads the VA’s bariatric endoscopy initiatives, recently spoke out about the real consequences of this gap. In a Times Union commentary, she described how patients develop metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) after missing out on early interventions like GLP-1 medications and nutritional counseling. Voices like hers are what help raise awareness and push forward change.

Tips for managing weight loss

1. Give yourself room to be human

Your weight loss journey won’t always follow a straight path, and that’s normal. Some days will feel easy, others will feel hard. That’s okay. Don’t be discouraged by a day of weight gain or a skipped workout. Progress is about consistency, not perfection. We’re here to support you every step of the way as you work toward your goal weight.

2. Move in ways that work for your environment

Physical activity doesn’t have to mean a gym membership or perfect weather. Walk around your home, stretch between meetings, take the stairs when you can, or dance to your favorite playlist. Even a few minutes at a time helps you maintain a healthy weight, boosts your mood, and can help with conditions like sleep apnea and high cholesterol.

3. Drink water throughout the day

Hydration plays a big role in managing side effects, especially when using medications to lose weight. It also supports your digestion and overall energy. Try adding lemon, cucumber, or berries if plain water isn’t your favorite. Staying hydrated can even help curb cravings and support healthier eating habits.
